Tekken 8 Defies Tradition at Bandai Namco

Tekken 8 director Katsuhiro Harada revealed how his headstrong leadership over the series clashed with the organizational norms at developer Bandai Namco. Since he came into prominence as one of the creative leads of the long-running Tekken series, Harada has cultivated a rebellious reputation among fans. However, the Tekken 8 director admitted his obstinate devotion to the franchise was also not always understood by the company and likely even unintentionally antagonized some of his colleagues.

For context, Harada has always been known as a bit of a rule-breaker, who would not back down even when faced with threats from Tekken fans. In an interview with the late Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata, the Tekken director revealed how his parents refused to buy him a console when he was young, which prompted him to sneak out to play games at a friend's house or his local arcade throughout his childhood. His career in the video game industry was similarly against their wishes and, while they have since come to accept his choice, Harada admitted they had initially wept when he accepted a job at Bandai Namco as a promoter for its arcade games.

Harada's headstrong nature did not change even when he was granted seniority in Bandai Namco. In a post to his official Twitter, the director revealed how he had previously been reassigned to the publishing side of Bandai Namco as the head of global business development. However, he chose to break an unstated rule in the company by involving himself with the future of the Tekken series, going against the trend of head developers transitioning over to managerial roles. This was also in spite of the fact that Tekken was not supposed to be one of his responsibilities and that he was even operating under a different department from the developers at the time.

Tekken Developers Were Bandai Namco Outlaws

The director's rebellious tendencies even appeared to rub off on other members of the TEKKEN Project, as Harada claimed he and his entire team were called outlaws by the other company heads. He admitted they were a notably willful group under Bandai Namco but also believed their firm devotion to each entry into the Tekken series likely played a major part in the franchise's continued relevance in the modern market.

However, the director's time as the rebellious leader of TEKKEN Project might also be coming to an end, as Harada claimed Tekken 9 would be his last game before he retired from the video game industry. Only time will tell whether his successor can live up to the Tekken 8 director's legacy.
