The domino set, often referred to as a deck or pack, traditionally consists of 28 tiles, known as bones, cards, tiles, tickets, stones, or spinners. These sets are versatile gaming devices, akin to playing cards or dice, capable of supporting a variety of games. Extended sets such as double 9 and double 12 are utilized for games like Mexican train and Chicken Foot. Each region boasts its own favorite domino games; for instance, England enjoys muggins (All fives), Scandinavian countries favor Bergen, Mexico plays Mexican train, and Spain has Matador.
The origins of dominoes trace back to the Song Dynasty in China, with the game reaching Italy in the 18th century. The transition from Chinese to modern dominoes remains a fascinating mystery.
General Rules of Dominoes:
Blocking Game:
The simplest domino variant is played between two players using a double six set. The 28 tiles are shuffled face down to form the stock or boneyard. Each player draws seven tiles, and the remaining tiles are set aside. Players place their tiles on-edge, ensuring privacy of their own tiles while being able to see the number of tiles in opponents' hands. The game starts with one player laying down the first tile, varying by game: in Muggins, it's the highest double (6-6); in Bergen, it's 0-0; in Mexican train, each round begins with the next lower double. Players take turns extending the line of play with matching values. The game concludes when a player plays their last tile or the game is blocked, with the winner being the one who caused the block, scoring points based on the remaining tiles in the opponent's hand.
Scoring Game:
Points are scored during gameplay for specific configurations or moves. In Muggins (All fives), points are awarded when the open ends of the layout sum to multiples of five. In Bergen, points are scored when the numbers on the open ends are equal. If a player fails to call "domino" before laying a tile and another player calls it afterward, the first player must draw an extra tile. In Mexican train, the double zero domino scores 50 points.
Draw Game:
In the draw game, players can draw as many tiles as they want from the stock before playing. The game ends when a player plays their last tile, with the score calculated from the pips in the losing player's hand and the stock. Typically, two tiles must remain in the stock. This game is commonly known simply as "dominos."
