Hnefatafl is an ancient Scandinavian board game, whose various forms were popular across medieval Europe long before the rise of chess. In these Tafl games, two armies of unequal size clash. The attacking black force aims to capture the white king, while the defending white army fights to protect their monarch and aid his escape.

Often known as the Viking Game, Hnefatafl brings legendary conflicts to life—from the Muscovite invasion of Sweden to Viking raids on Britain. Yet every story shares one core theme: the thrilling hunt for the king.
