Exciting news for handheld PC gaming enthusiasts: the Lenovo Legion Go S with SteamOS is now available for preorder at Best Buy. This marks the first time a device other than Valve's Steam Deck will ship with SteamOS, the Linux-based operating system designed for gaming. The Lenovo Legion Go S with SteamOS is set to launch on May 25, with prices starting at $549.99. Let's explore what this new portable gaming machine has to offer.

This model features a 120Hz gaming handheld powered by an AMD Ryzen Z2 Go chip, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD. Priced at $549.99, it matches the cost of the 512GB OLED Steam Deck.

For those seeking more power, this version comes with an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip, 32GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD. It's available for $749.99.
Both configurations of the SteamOS-powered Legion Go S offer a 120Hz gaming handheld experience with two USB-C ports. Storage can be expanded using a microSD card, and the device includes trigger locks for hair triggers, enhancing gameplay in competitive shooters like Marvel Rivals.
With more powerful chips than the Steam Deck, the Legion Go S should be capable of running recent games that the Deck struggles with, such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Star Wars Outlaws, Dragon’s Dogma 2, and Monster Hunter Wilds.

It's important to note that these SteamOS-based Legion Go S models are distinct from the earlier Windows 11-based Legion Go S. For insights into why you might want to steer clear of the Windows version, check out our Lenovo Legion Go S review. If you're still interested in the Windows model, it's available at Best Buy for $729.99.
Valve has also announced plans to make SteamOS available for other non-Steam Deck handhelds, suggesting that soon you'll be able to install SteamOS on a variety of handheld gaming PCs. This development could coincide with the launch of the SteamOS-based Legion Go S models. If you're looking for devices that are more powerful than the Steam Deck and run SteamOS, the Lenovo Legion Go S should be at the top of your list.
