How To Unlock Multiple Pets in Stardew Valley
Screenshot by The EscapistStarting a new farm grants you the choice of a cat or dog companion. While initially limited to a single pet per save, the 1.6 update (early 2024) changed all that! To add more pets, you'll need to meet a few prerequisites.
First, you must max out your current pet's friendship level. This involves daily care: fill their water bowl (except on rainy or snowy days) and give them a good pet (indicated by a heart above their head). Monitor their friendship using the "Animals" tab in the pause menu.
Screenshot by The EscapistOnce their friendship meter is full, Marnie will send a message about adopting more pets from her shop. If you skipped adopting a pet your first year, you’ll receive this message at the start of Year 2.

How To Get Supplies for Pets in Stardew Valley
Screenshot by The EscapistAfter adopting, head to Robin's shop to commission Pet Bowls (5,000g and 25 Hardwood each). These are essential; they serve as your pet's home and prevent friendship decay. Neglecting them could lead to your pet running away!
Screenshot by The EscapistMarnie also sells optional decorative items like doghouses and cat trees, but these don't affect friendship.
And there you have it! Enjoy your expanded Stardew Valley pet family. Check out The Escapist for more Stardew Valley news and guides!
