Nick Frost has shared his initial reflections on taking on the role of Hagrid in HBO's forthcoming Harry Potter television series, emphasizing his intention to avoid merely imitating previous portrayals.
The star of Hot Fuzz and the live-action How to Train Your Dragon mentioned he has already started pre-production work for his performance as Hagrid. He has considered how to make his interpretation of the beloved Hogwarts gamekeeper distinct, while still retaining elements that fans will recognize.
"While I deeply respect what came before me, especially Robbie Coltrane's incredible performance, I won't be attempting to replicate Robbie," Frost told Collider.
"I aim to bring something, not necessarily 'different,' but nuanced," he continued. "You have to honor the source material, but there is room for subtle personal touches."
The late Robbie Coltrane played Hagrid in all eight Harry Potter films and was said to have inspired the original character in the books.
Frost has now committed to portraying Hagrid for the next decade, as the Harry Potter TV series adapts each book into its own season.
"I've had the chance to visit some sets, and they're growing a Hagrid beard," Frost separately told ScreenRant. It is unclear if this refers to a prosthetic beard being created for him to wear, or if someone is literally growing a beard that will later be used for the production.

Newcomers Dominic McLaughlin will portray Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton will play Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout will take on the role of Ron Weasley.
"As a father myself, I will be very protective of these children," Frost said of the trio. "I believe that reflects one of Hagrid's core traits—his protective nature towards them. I am genuinely excited to explore that."
Other confirmed cast members include John Lithgow (Conclave, Dexter) in the pivotal role of Albus Dumbledore, and Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You, Black Mirror) as Severus Snape.

Janet McTeer (Me Before You, The Menu) is set to play Minerva McGonagall, Luke Thallon (The Favourite, Present Laughter) will appear as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse (The Fast Show, Alice Through the Looking Glass) will portray the long-suffering caretaker Argus Filch.
"I've always seen Hagrid as a delightful, lost, occasionally fierce, humorous, and warm-hearted child at heart," Frost concluded. "The advantage of adapting one book per season is the opportunity to delve deeper into these facets. I can't wait. He's humorous! I want to capture his funny, cheeky, fearful, protective, and childlike qualities. That's my goal."
The Harry Potter TV series is scheduled to begin filming its first season this year, with a planned premiere on HBO in early 2027.
