Nintendo Switch 2 Filings Reveal NFC Support, Suggesting Amiibo Will Work With It

Recent Federal Communication Commission (FCC) filings for the Nintendo Switch 2 have unveiled several exciting features, including support for Near Field Communication (NFC). This development suggests that the next-generation console will likely be compatible with Amiibo figures, allowing players to unlock in-game content similar to the current Nintendo Switch. The NFC capability is expected to be integrated into the right Joy-Con, mirroring the original Switch's design.

In addition to NFC support, the filings reveal that the Nintendo Switch 2 can be charged via its bottom USB-C port or a new top port, enhancing the user experience as anticipated after the console's official reveal. The new model will also upgrade its connectivity with support for Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) networks, offering up to 80MHz of bandwidth—a significant improvement over the Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) of its predecessor. Notably, there's no mention of support for Wi-Fi 7 or Wi-Fi 6E.

Regarding power, the Switch 2 remains rated for a maximum of 15V, but an AC adapter capable of up to 20V was mentioned, leaving the actual charging speed a mystery.

A Nintendo patent hints at an innovative feature for the Switch 2's Joy-Con controllers, suggesting they could be attached upside down, utilizing magnets instead of the traditional rails found on the original Switch. This design change could allow for customizable button placements and headphone ports, potentially opening up new gameplay mechanics if incorporated into the final product.

The Nintendo Switch 2's first look and additional details were showcased in a brief trailer earlier in January, confirming backwards compatibility and the addition of a second USB-C port. While many specifics, such as other games and the function of a mysterious new Joy-Con button, remain undisclosed, the Joy-Con mouse theory has gained traction among enthusiasts.

Nintendo is set to provide a more comprehensive overview of these features at a special Nintendo Direct event scheduled for April 2 at 6am Pacific / 9am Eastern / 2pm UK time. As for the release timeline, although Nintendo hasn't confirmed a specific window, rumors suggest the Switch 2 could launch between June and September, buoyed by hands-on events up until June and statements from Greedfall 2 publisher Nacon, indicating a release before September.
