Nintendo Switch Update Closes Popular Game Sharing Loophole
May 15,2025Author: Evelyn
Nintendo has rolled out the latest system update for the Nintendo Switch, introducing a new feature called Virtual Game Cards in anticipation of the upcoming Switch 2 launch. This update, however, has put an end to a popular workaround that allowed users to play the same digital game online simultaneously across two different Switch consoles.
As reported by Eurogamer, Switch owners could previously exploit a method where the primary console would launch a game, enabling the game's owner to play it online on another Switch. This method is no longer viable with the introduction of the Virtual Game Cards system.
Despite this change, there's still a way to play a single digital game copy across two consoles, but it requires going offline. By navigating to your profile's user settings and enabling the Online Licenses option, you can play a digital game without the Virtual Game Card as long as it isn't being used elsewhere or the console playing it is set to offline mode. Here's the description of the setting:
"If this option is enabled, purchased digital software will be playable while the console is connected to the internet, even when the virtual game card for that software isn't loaded to the console. However, when using an online licence, only the user signed into the Nintendo Account that was used to purchase the software will be able to play it; it will not be playable for other users on the console. Your virtual game cards can be used to play software regardless of this setting. Online licences cannot be used on multiple consoles at the same time. The online licence and virtual game card for a software title cannot be used at the same time."
In essence, if one Switch is offline, you can still enjoy the same game on two different Switches simultaneously. Eurogamer confirmed this workaround still functions effectively. The major shift is that playing the same game online at the same time is no longer possible, as the previous loophole has been closed.
The gaming community, particularly users on forums like ResetEra and Reddit, are expressing dissatisfaction with this change. Many are frustrated because their previous game-sharing setups are disrupted, especially the ability to play online together. Games like Splatoon and Minecraft, often enjoyed by families or groups, are at the heart of this discontent.
For families, this update could mean doubling the cost of games if multiple children want to play together on different Switches. It's a significant change, and although it's technically closing a loophole, it was a beneficial one for many users, leading to widespread frustration with the new system.
This update comes just over a month before the launch of the Switch 2, which will also implement the same Virtual Game Cards system. Additionally, the Switch 2 will introduce Game-Key Cards, where some games won't have the full game on the cartridge and will require an online download to complete the installation.
