Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) rolled out its highly anticipated final patch, concluding the RPG’s remarkable journey. On April 15, 2025, Larian Studios released Patch 8, the game’s last major update. This milestone drove a surge in player numbers, pushing BG3 just outside Steam’s top 10 most-played games. Previously averaging around 60,000 concurrent players, the game now boasts over 169,000 as of this report.
Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke shared on Twitter (X) on April 22 that the player surge followed Patch 8’s release. He highlighted the game’s robust mod support, which allows the studio to shift focus to their “next big project.” Reports confirm Larian Studios is stepping away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) universe to pursue an original venture.
As a result, D&D owners Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro will carry the Baldur’s Gate franchise forward without Larian Studios. They are currently exploring partnerships with other studios to develop a potential Baldur’s Gate 4.
Announced in a November 2024 Steam blog post, Patch 8 has been in development for months. The update introduces 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play functionality, and more. Larian Studios shared a detailed overview of the patch on BG3’s website. Compared to the initial November 2024 announcement, this update includes an expanded list of bug fixes and combat balance tweaks, ensuring the game’s final version is as polished as intended.
Larian Studios poured significant effort into refining BG3, evident in the extensive fixes and enhancements in this final update. While this marks their last major patch, the studio committed to ongoing support for the modding community.
