The Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair collaboration with Sonic the Hedgehog launched today, drawing massive interest. Within minutes, eager buyers faced extended queue times and uncertainty in securing the limited-edition cards.
Secret Lair, Magic’s exclusive card line, often features bold artistic takes or unique spins on classic cards. Previous releases have included innovative redesigns and major franchise crossovers, like the highly successful Final Fantasy Secret Lair, which sold out quickly.
Sonic the Hedgehog, the iconic Blue Blur, unsurprisingly attracted significant attention. Fans flooded the site this morning to purchase the Sonic-themed Secret Lair set, causing queue times to soar.
Waiting yet another hour to find out I can’t buy the sonic secret lair because I was .01 seconds too slow to checkout
(And I once again do not receive an email notification that it’s going live despite signing up to be “notified” about 12 times now)

Social media buzzed with complaints as Magic and Sonic enthusiasts patiently awaited their chance to grab the cards. The set includes reprints of iconic Magic cards, such as Unexpected Windfall, Sol Ring, and Lightning Greaves, alongside new cards, including potential Commanders for fans eager to build decks around beloved Sonic characters.
Shortly after the launch, the Secret Lair team announced that the pre-order site was grappling with "extremely high traffic," leading to longer-than-usual wait times. Later updates confirmed efforts to address queue-related issues.

In my own experience, I tried adding cards to my cart about 30 minutes after the set launched, only to face a queue page displaying a wait time of "more than an hour." Some fans have reported gradually getting through, but patience is clearly key to securing this set.
Wizards of the Coast set a purchase limit of two per item, which has helped manage demand slightly. However, the shift from print-to-order to a limited-print-run model last year has drawn some criticism.
While some fans shared stories of frustrating waits, others who persevered successfully secured their cards. The true scarcity of this set will become clearer in the coming days as some stock appears on third-party seller platforms.
Looking ahead, the next Magic: The Gathering set, Edge of Eternities, is set to release on August 1, with pre-release events starting July 25.
