Tron enthusiasts have plenty to look forward to in 2025, as the long-awaited sequel, Tron: Ares, is set to hit theaters this October. Jared Leto stars as Ares, a program embarking on a mysterious and high-stakes mission that takes him from the digital world into the real one. But is Ares truly a sequel, or does it signal a new direction for the franchise?
Visually, Ares seems to be a direct descendant of 2010's Tron: Legacy, as evident from the newly released trailer. The electronica-heavy score, now helmed by Nine Inch Nails instead of Daft Punk, continues to be a central element, promising a thrilling auditory experience. Yet, the film appears to be more of a soft reboot than a traditional sequel. Key characters from Legacy, such as Garrett Hedlund's Sam Flynn and Olivia Wilde's Quorra, are notably absent, raising questions about the continuity of their storylines.

Tron: Legacy's Setup for a Sequel
Tron: Legacy centered on the journey of Sam Flynn, the son of Kevin Flynn (played by Jeff Bridges), who ventured into The Grid to rescue his father and thwart CLU's plan to invade the real world. Alongside Sam was Quorra, an ISO—a digital being—and a symbol of life's potential within the digital realm. The film concluded with Sam returning to the real world with Quorra, setting the stage for a sequel where Sam would lead Encom into a new era of openness and innovation.
Despite this setup, neither Hedlund nor Wilde are returning for Ares. Disney's decision to pivot away from the established narrative might stem from Legacy's performance, which, while successful, did not meet the studio's expectations with a worldwide gross of $409.9 million against a $170 million budget. The absence of Sam and Quorra leaves a significant gap in the franchise, and fans hope that Ares will at least acknowledge their impact, even if they do not reprise their roles.
Cillian Murphy’s Edward Dillinger, Jr.
Another notable absence is Cillian Murphy, who played Edward Dillinger, Jr., in a brief cameo in Legacy. His character was poised to become a significant antagonist in future installments, mirroring his father's role in the original Tron. The Ares trailer hints at the return of the Master Control Program (MCP), suggesting a connection to the original film's villainy. Yet, without Dillinger, Jr., and with Gillian Anderson's new character taking a prominent role at Encom, the narrative direction remains uncertain. Evan Peters plays Julian Dillinger, indicating the family's continued involvement, but whether Murphy returns remains to be seen.
Bruce Boxleitner’s Tron
The most surprising omission is Bruce Boxleitner, who portrayed both Alan Bradley and the titular character, Tron, in the original film and reprised his role as Alan in Legacy. The absence of Tron himself in Ares is particularly puzzling, especially given the character's redemption arc at the end of Legacy. Fans are left wondering if Tron has been recast or if his story will be addressed in the new film.
Why Is Jeff Bridges in Tron: Ares?
The return of Jeff Bridges, whose characters Kevin Flynn and CLU both died in Legacy, adds another layer of intrigue. His voice is heard in the trailer, but it's unclear whether he's reprising Flynn, CLU, or a new iteration. The possibility of Flynn's digital presence surviving or achieving a form of immortality in The Grid opens up fascinating narrative possibilities. However, it's peculiar that Ares chooses to resurrect Bridges' characters while leaving out other key survivors from Legacy.
While Tron: Ares promises excitement and mystery, it also leaves fans with numerous questions about the franchise's direction and continuity. The inclusion of Nine Inch Nails' score is a promising sign, but the absence of beloved characters and the reintroduction of others create a complex tapestry that we'll eagerly unravel upon the film's release.
