As you journey through Avowed, encountering stronger foes will become inevitable. To maintain your edge in battle, upgrading your gear to match or exceed the power of your adversaries is essential. Here’s a guide to enhancing your weapons and armor effectively.

In Avowed, upgrades for both weapons and armor are carried out at the Workbench, located within Party Camps. These Workbenches require specific materials based on the type of gear and its current Quality. Many of these materials can be sourced directly from the game world or crafted. Upgrading from one Quality tier to another demands increasingly rare forms of Adra.
Party Camps can be established anywhere an Adra Waystone is discovered. Interact with the Waystone and choose the option to set up camp. Once established, these camps appear on your map as tent icons, allowing for quick travel to them.
How Weapon and Armor Upgrades Work in Avowed
Weapons and armor in Avowed are categorized primarily by Quality, which includes a numerical value, color rarity, and descriptive term. The numerical value and color rarity align with enemy levels in the Living Lands. Gear with a lower Quality rating compared to the enemies you face will perform poorly against them.
Engaging enemies stronger than your gear's Quality will reveal its limitations, as damage output decreases and protection weakens. Conversely, higher-quality gear provides significant advantages when battling foes of equal or lesser strength. Upgrading your gear alongside rising enemy levels ensures continued effectiveness in combat. Below are the Quality tiers in Avowed:
- Common Quality: Green, Level I
- Fine Quality: Blue, Level II
- Exceptional: Purple, Level III
- Superb: Red, Level IV
- Legendary: Gold, Level V
Each Quality level allows for three additional upgrades, denoted as +0 through +3. Although these incremental upgrades offer less dramatic improvements than moving up a Quality tier, they still enhance weapon and armor stats. To proceed to the next Quality tier, all three upgrade levels must first be completed.
Additional Upgrades for Weapons and Armor
Within each Quality tier, gear can receive three additional upgrades. These are labeled +0, +1, +2, and +3. While these upgrades provide smaller boosts compared to advancing a Quality tier, they still contribute to overall gear performance. Completing all three upgrade levels is required before progressing to the next Quality level.
Which Weapons and Armor Should You Upgrade?
Gear in Avowed falls into two primary categories: standard and Unique. Standard gear is widely available throughout the game world, either as loot or purchasable from Merchants. In contrast, Unique gear consists of named, high-value items usually acquired via quests, boss drops, or specific Merchant purchases.
Unique gear offers greater potential for enhancement, reaching the highest Quality tier—Legendary—and includes unique bonuses. Standard gear, however, tops out at Superb Quality and lacks special abilities. It is advisable to focus resources on upgrading Unique gear while using standard gear temporarily until better options are found. Selling non-Unique gear or breaking it down for resources helps conserve valuable materials needed for Unique upgrades.
That’s how you upgrade weapons and armor in Avowed.
