Vincent D'Onofrio Discusses Wilson Fisk's Movie Rights Issues
Apr 12,2025Author: Emily
It turns out that our beloved Hell's Kitchen antagonist, Wilson Fisk, portrayed by Vincent D’Onofrio, might be off-limits for the big screen. In a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, D’Onofrio shared with host Josh Horowitz that utilizing his character in Marvel's cinematic universe is fraught with complications.
"The only thing I know is not positive," D’Onofrio stated. "It's a very hard thing to do, for Marvel to use my character. It's a very hard thing to do, because of ownership and stuff." He elaborated that he's only available for television projects and not for standalone movies featuring Wilson Fisk. "I’m only usable for television shows. Not even a one-off Wilson Fisk movie. It’s all caught up in rights and stuff. I don’t know when that would work out—or if it ever would work out at all."
This revelation suggests that D’Onofrio's portrayal of Fisk won't grace the silver screen in upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe films like Spider-Man: Brand New Day or Avengers: Doomsday. This news might also complicate plans for a potential Charlie Cox-led Daredevil movie, where Fisk's presence as a villain would be highly anticipated.
D’Onofrio first captivated audiences as Fisk, the formidable crimelord and future mayor of New York City also known as Kingpin, in the 2015 Netflix series Marvel’s Daredevil. The show ran for three seasons, concluding with nearly 40 episodes in 2018. His performance has garnered widespread acclaim from fans and critics, reflecting the depth and nuance he brings to the character. D’Onofrio has shared insights into the influences that shape his portrayal of Fisk, particularly emphasizing the impact of everyman performances.
In a recent interview with IGN, D’Onofrio discussed how actors like Harrison Ford inspired his approach to action scenes. "Anytime they were in a fight, or they were holding a gun, they looked nervous," he explained. "They carried their own humility into the action scenes with them. And I always thought that that was the way to go. That made it look real to me. Gary Cooper in Sergeant York, when he takes aim, when he becomes the sniper, it's the humility in his eyes that you see. It's amazing. I think that helps action stuff a lot. We're all very conscious of that."
As fans eagerly follow the current season of Daredevil: Born Again, which is airing weekly on Disney+ and set to conclude its first season on April 15, 2025, the complexities of character rights continue to shape the future of beloved characters like Wilson Fisk.
