Blizzard Welcomes Marvel Rivals as Close Competitor to Overwatch 2

Apr 07,2025 Author: Amelia

Since its reveal, Marvel Rivals has drawn immediate comparisons to Overwatch due to their striking similarities. Both games are competitive multiplayer hero shooters, featuring free-to-play models and live service monetization, with a focus on introducing new characters to keep the gameplay fresh. Marvel Rivals, launched in December, has seen a surge in popularity, reportedly at the expense of Overwatch 2's player base.

In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Aaron Keller, the director of Overwatch 2, acknowledged the new competitive landscape created by Marvel Rivals. Despite the challenge, Keller described the situation as "exciting" and praised Marvel Rivals for taking Overwatch's established ideas in new directions. He admitted that the success of Marvel Rivals has prompted Blizzard to adopt a less cautious approach to Overwatch 2.

Blizzard has announced significant changes for Overwatch 2 in 2025, including new content and a major overhaul of the core gameplay. Key additions will include hero perks and the reintroduction of loot boxes, aiming to reignite interest in the game. Overwatch, which debuted in 2016, and its sequel, launched in 2022, have seen declining player numbers on Steam, with a recent peak of just 37,046 concurrent players. In contrast, Marvel Rivals remains a top 10 game on Steam, boasting a peak of 310,287 concurrent players over the last 24 hours.

Overwatch 2 continues to face challenges, reflected in its 'mostly negative' user review rating on Steam. The game became the worst user-reviewed title on the platform in August 2023, primarily due to backlash over its monetization model and the controversial transition from the original Overwatch to a free-to-play sequel. Further controversies, such as the cancellation of the much-anticipated PvE Hero mode, have compounded these issues.
