Players & Cards

Tong-its is exclusively designed for three players, utilizing one standard Anglo-American deck of 52 cards (excluding jokers). The card values range from Ace (1 point) to King (10 points), with all other cards valued according to their face.

Game Objective

The goal of the game is to form sets and runs while minimizing the count of unmatched cards in your hand through strategic drawing and discarding.

A run comprises three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, e.g., ♥4, ♥5, ♥6 or ♠8, ♠9, ♠10, ♠J. (An A-K-Q sequence does not qualify as a run since Aces are low.)

A set involves three or four cards of identical rank, such as ♥7, ♣7, ♦7. A card can belong to only one combination at a time, meaning it cannot simultaneously be part of both a set and a run.

The Deal

The initial dealer is selected randomly, followed by the previous hand's winner. Cards are distributed one at a time counterclockwise: thirteen to the dealer and twelve to each opponent. The leftover deck forms the stock, face down.

The Play

Each turn follows these steps:

Draw Begin by selecting one card from the stock or the top discard pile, adding it to your hand. Accessing the discard pile requires forming a meld, obligating its exposure.

Expose Melds Reveal valid melds (sets or runs) by placing them on the table. Optional if drawing from the stock. A minimum of one meld must be laid to open the hand. For a set of four, face-down placement preserves bonuses while concealing cards.

Lay Off (Sapaw) This step is optional. Add cards to existing sets or runs on the table. No limit exists on the number of cards laid in one turn. Opening your hand isn't necessary. Blocking opponents' draws is possible.

Discard Conclude your turn by discarding one card onto the face-up discard pile.
