Nicolas Cage Calls AI Performances a 'Dead End', as 'Robots Cannot Reflect the Human Condition'

Nicolas Cage has issued a strong warning against the use of artificial intelligence in acting, asserting that actors who allow AI to influence their performances are heading towards "a dead end." In his view, AI is incapable of capturing the complexities of the human condition.

As reported by Variety, Cage, accepting his Best Actor Saturn Award for his role in Dream Scenario, used his acceptance speech to express his concerns. He praised the film's director, Kristoffer Borgli, but then shifted his focus to the burgeoning threat of AI in the industry.

Cage stated that he believes actors should not allow robots to dictate their creative process, arguing that AI cannot authentically reflect the human experience. He warned that even minor AI manipulation could lead to a loss of artistic integrity, ultimately prioritizing financial gain over artistic truth. He emphasized the crucial role of art, including acting, in mirroring the human condition through genuine emotional and intellectual engagement—a process he believes AI is fundamentally incapable of replicating. He fears that unchecked AI use will result in art devoid of heart and authenticity, ultimately leading to a homogenized, robotic representation of life.

Cage is not alone in his apprehension. The concerns are particularly acute in voice acting, where AI has been used to recreate entire performances, even in high-profile video games. Several voice actors, including Ned Luke (Grand Theft Auto 5) and Doug Cockle (The Witcher), have openly criticized AI's use, highlighting its potential to negatively impact their livelihoods. Cockle, while acknowledging AI's inevitability, described it as "dangerous" and a form of income theft.

Filmmakers are also divided on the issue. While Tim Burton expressed his unease with AI-generated art, describing it as "very disturbing," Zack Snyder advocates for embracing AI technology rather than resisting it.
