Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nears Release, Writer Hints

Apr 18,2025 Author: Riley

Remember Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie? Fear not, fans—the director of Deadpool & Wolverine is still on board, and we've got a fresh update from the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper, to keep our spirits high.

"I am [excited] too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant about the eagerly anticipated project. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."

At this stage, the movie remains shrouded in mystery, with only a few details known. One crucial piece of information is that it is set to take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy shed light on its timeline in a February interview with Deadline, stating, "That’s also in the future. It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy's film as the first to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker era.

In the same discussion, Kennedy confirmed that Levy’s movie will follow the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu in 2026. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Additionally, it has been reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in the film.

Tropper's optimistic words hint that progress is being made on Levy's project. However, fans will need to exercise patience, as the movie is not expected to hit theaters until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027.

Disney has not released a Star Wars film since the controversial Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. In the interim, several planned projects, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, were canceled. Moreover, a Star Wars movie slated for late 2026 was recently removed from Disney's release calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new feature films: a New Republic movie directed by Dave Filoni set within his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi film helmed by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. This latter project will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey, continuing her story post-The Rise of Skywalker.

The Obaid-Chinoy project has undergone several transformations, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently stepping away after succeeding Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Nonetheless, Rey remains a focal point for Disney, with reports indicating her involvement in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.

Disney's Star Wars slate is expansive, with X-Men producer Simon Kinberg announced to write a new trilogy that will not be a continuation of the Skywalker Saga, contrary to earlier rumors.

The next Star Wars content to grace your screens will be Season 2 of Andor, set to debut on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple premiere episode.
