Firewalk Studios' Concord: A Short-Lived Hero Shooter

Concord Was Short-Lived, But Not The Shortest-Lived

Firewalk Studios' 5v5 hero shooter, Concord, met an abrupt end just two weeks after its launch. The game's servers went offline on September 6th, 2024, a decision announced by Game Director Ryan Ellis due to the game's failure to meet expectations. Despite positive qualities, the launch fell short of its goals, resulting in the shutdown. Full refunds were issued for digital purchases on Steam, Epic Games Store, and the PlayStation Store.

The closure is a setback for both Firewalk Studios and Sony, who had high hopes for the title. The studio's acquisition by Sony, based on their perceived potential, seemed promising. Ambitious post-launch plans, including a season launch and weekly cutscenes, were ultimately scrapped due to the game's poor performance.

Concord's struggles began early. Even after eight years of development, it failed to attract a substantial player base, peaking at only 697 concurrent players. This dismal performance, compared to its beta peak of 2,388 players, highlights the game's significant shortfall. Analysts point to several contributing factors: a lack of differentiation from existing hero shooters, uninspired character designs, and a high price point of $40 compared to free-to-play competitors. Minimal marketing further hampered its success.

While Firewalk Studios is exploring future options, the possibility of a Concord revival remains uncertain. While some suggest a free-to-play model, critics argue that this wouldn't address the core issues of bland character designs and lackluster gameplay. A complete overhaul, similar to the successful revival of Final Fantasy XIV, might be necessary for a potential comeback. Game8's review gave Concord a 56/100, highlighting its visual appeal contrasted with its lifeless gameplay.
