As reported by the GamingLeaksandRumours subreddit, deleted social media posts showed images and gameplay footage from an individual who reportedly purchased the game through an online marketplace. This latest leak adds to the challenges Ubisoft has faced with Assassin’s Creed Shadows since its announcement. Earlier this month, Ubisoft maintained that preorder numbers for the game remain strong despite a rocky development and marketing cycle.
In its recent financial report, the publisher stated that "preorders are tracking solidly, in line with those of Assassin's Creed Odyssey, the franchise’s second most successful installment."
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot expressed confidence in the project, saying, "Early previews have been positive, with praise for the narrative depth and immersive experience. Both protagonists play vital roles in the story, and the dual-hero system delivers complementary gameplay styles."
He added, "I want to commend the incredible talent and dedication of the entire Assassin’s Creed team, who are working tirelessly to deliver on the promise of the most ambitious entry in the franchise to date."
Assassin's Creed Shadows was initially slated for a November release before being delayed to February 14. A subsequent delay pushed the launch to its current date of March 20.
Considerable expectations rest on Assassin's Creed Shadows—not only as the long-awaited Japanese installment and the first full series entry since 2020, but also as a critical title for Ubisoft, which needs a commercial success following recent disappointments and investor concerns.
However, the game’s promotional period has been marred by several controversies. The development team has issued apologies for inaccuracies in its depiction of Japanese history and for using a historical recreation group's flag without permission.
In another incident, collectible manufacturer PureArts removed an Assassin’s Creed Shadows statue from sale due to criticism over its insensitive design.
