Deadlock's latest major update, announced on February 26, 2025, brings significant changes to the game, including a reduction from four lanes to three. This major overhaul aims to simplify the map structure and enhance various gameplay features. Valve's detailed update on Steam outlines the transformation, which includes a comprehensive range of map-wide changes. These alterations affect visuals, building layouts, pathways, neutral camps, air vents, breakables, powerup buffs, juke spots, and even the mid boss. This redesign is pivotal, as Deadlock's unique approach to the MOBA genre, characterized by its third-person perspective, may have been overly complicated with the previous four-lane setup.
The update also introduces changes to the farming mechanics. Players will no longer need to last-hit enemy troopers to summon Soul Orbs, making the early laning phases more accessible. Alongside these gameplay adjustments, Valve has promised improvements to the game's netcode and client performance, which should enhance the overall gaming experience.
This update could be the catalyst needed to rekindle interest in Deadlock. After a peak of 171,490 active players in September 2024, the game experienced a sharp decline, with only around 17,000 players active last month. In response to community feedback and the need for more substantial updates, Valve Developer Yoshi announced in January 2025 via the game's Discord server that the team would shift away from their previous two-week update cycle. Yoshi emphasized that future major patches would be larger and more spaced out, with ongoing hotfixes as needed, to better reflect the team's vision for the game's development.
Currently, Deadlock remains in active development and playtesting, accessible only through friend invites. While no official release date has been announced, fans can stay updated on the latest news and developments by visiting our dedicated Deadlock page.
