Doug Cockle Discusses His Role as Geralt in Netflix's The Witcher

While Henry Cavill may be the most recognized face behind Geralt of Rivia, within the gaming community, Doug Cockle is revered as the definitive voice of the iconic character from CD Projekt Red's acclaimed RPG series. The worlds of Cavill and Cockle's portrayals have now intertwined, as Cockle lends his distinctive voice to the character in Netflix's latest animated film, "The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep."

In this new venture, Cockle does not emulate Cavill or Liam Hemsworth, who steps into the role of Geralt in the upcoming season of the live-action series. Instead, he brings the same depth and gravelly tone that fans have cherished for nearly two decades. This continuity allows listeners to reconnect with the familiar voice they've grown to love since 2005, when Cockle first crafted Geralt's unique vocal style for the original Witcher game.

Crafting that voice was no small feat. Cockle recalls the challenges of recording the first game, where he pushed his voice to the lowest registers, often leaving his throat strained after long sessions. This struggle persisted into the recording of "The Witcher 2," but over time, his vocal cords adapted, much like an athlete conditioning their muscles.

The release of "The Last Wish" in English during the development of "The Witcher 2" marked a turning point for Cockle. Previously guided solely by CD Projekt Red's developers, he delved into Andrzej Sapkowski's books and gained a deeper understanding of Geralt's character. The novels revealed nuances about Geralt's seemingly emotionless demeanor, which Cockle learned to embody more authentically.

Cockle's appreciation for Sapkowski's writing grew, especially after reading "Season of Storms," a novel he'd love to see adapted into an anime or TV episode due to its thrilling and graphic narrative. His connection to the fantasy world, inspired by his earlier love for Tolkien, deepened his engagement with the Witcher universe.

In "The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep," based on the short story "A Little Sacrifice" from "Sword of Destiny," Cockle's Geralt navigates a conflict between two kingdoms following a romance between a mermaid and a human prince. While the film offers intense action and political drama, Cockle is particularly drawn to the lighter moments, such as a humorous campfire conversation with Jaskier, which highlights Geralt's often overlooked softer side.

A unique challenge in "Sirens of the Deep" was Cockle's need to speak in a fictional mermaid language, which he found more difficult than anticipated. Despite the difficulty, he managed to deliver a performance that added depth to the film.

Cockle's return to video games in "The Witcher 4" promises to be a smoother transition. Revealed at The Game Awards, the game will feature Geralt as a supporting character to Ciri, his adoptive daughter, who takes the lead role. This shift in perspective excites Cockle, who sees it as a fresh and intriguing direction for the saga, aligned with the developments in Sapkowski's books.

While Cockle remains tight-lipped about "The Witcher 4," he encourages fans to explore the books and stay tuned for more from CD Projekt Red. For more on Doug Cockle and the Witcher universe, watch "The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep" on Netflix, and follow Cockle on Instagram, Cameo, and X.
