Heroes of Newerth Revived with Relaunch Expected

Summary

  • Following its 2022 shutdown, the developer of Heroes of Newerth hinted at a potential return via social media.
  • Recent Twitter activity from the developer sparked fan speculation about a Heroes of Newerth revival.
  • Significant player interest in a Heroes of Newerth comeback persists, with players eagerly awaiting further updates.

The classic MOBA, Heroes of Newerth, unexpectedly closed its servers in 2022, may be poised for a remarkable return. While confirmation remains pending, the developer's renewed activity on Heroes of Newerth's social media platforms—dormant for over three years—suggests a possible announcement is brewing, reigniting anticipation for this League of Legends and Dota 2 competitor.

The success of the Warcraft 3 mod, Dota, spurred numerous studios to create their own Dota-inspired games. The simple yet engaging concept of two teams battling to destroy each other's base quickly captivated gamers. League of Legends, Dota 2, Heroes of the Storm, and Heroes of Newerth emerged as leading MOBAs in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Unfortunately, Heroes of Newerth couldn't maintain its competitive edge, leading to its closure. However, recent developments hint at a potential resurgence.

In MOBAs, my preferred playstyle mirrors that of MMOs: a top/off-lane bruiser. In League of Legends, Aatrox and Mordekaiser are favorites; in Dota 2, I gravitate towards Axe, Sven, or Tidehunter. If this role is unavailable, I'm adaptable, though I favor ranged carries over mid or support roles.

The first indication of a potential Heroes of Newerth revival came via a recent social media post. The official Twitter account's previous post, a farewell message from developer Garena announcing the game's shutdown, dates back to December 2021. After a three-year hiatus, a "Happy NEW Year" message (with "NEW" capitalized) appeared on January 1st. Furthermore, subtle updates to the Heroes of Newerth website now display a silhouetted game logo with surrounding particles.

Heroes of Newerth's Resurrected Social Media Presence Hints at a Comeback

While initially appearing isolated, this activity quickly captured player attention. Nostalgia flooded in, with many reminiscing about their Heroes of Newerth experiences. Speculation of a comeback intensified, with comments such as "Don't give me hope." This theory gained further traction with a January 6th post featuring a large, cracking egg. This second post fueled even more speculation, with theories ranging from HoN hero integration into Dota 2 to the development of a mobile version.

The renewed social media activity surrounding Heroes of Newerth has undeniably excited players, highlighting the enduring interest in the game. The developer's intentions remain unclear, but if the ongoing speculation proves accurate, it will be fascinating to see how Heroes of Newerth fares against today's top MOBA titles.
