Recent reports indicate the Nintendo Switch 2's rumored "C" button may be dedicated to chat functions. This could resolve a significant mystery surrounding the upcoming console's hardware.
Since late 2024, numerous Switch 2 leaks have surfaced, likely due to the console entering mass production. These leaks consistently show an extra button—a dark gray "C"—on the right Joy-Con, below the home button. However, the button's purpose remained unknown until now.
Datamining the latest Switch OS reveals a feature called "Campus," potentially enabling group and voice chat for Nintendo Switch Online users. A Discord server dedicated to Switch 2 leaks reported this discovery. While "Campus" starts with "C," the button's function is more likely related to "chat" than the feature's name. This refutes theories suggesting the "C" button is for screen casting.
The same source indicates "Campus" will support screen sharing and chat groups of up to 12 users.
Group and voice chats necessitate internet connectivity, likely limiting access to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. This contrasts with the original Switch's kid-friendly design, which intentionally omitted chat features. Reintroducing chat could introduce concerns Nintendo may wish to avoid.
The existence and function of the "C" button, along with other Switch 2 details, should be clarified with the official announcement expected on Thursday, January 16th.
