Mastering Path of Exile 2's Expedition Endgame: A Comprehensive Guide

Path of Exile 2 introduces four major endgame events: Delirium, Breaches, Rituals, and Expeditions. This guide focuses on Expeditions, a returning mechanic from the original PoE, detailing its mechanics, rewards, and the crucial Expedition Passive Skill Tree.

Unveiling the Expedition: Mechanics and Gameplay

Expeditions are identified on the Atlas map by a light blue, spiral-shaped icon. An Expedition Precursor Tablet placed in a completed Lost Tower slot guarantees an Expedition encounter on a chosen map node.

Upon entering a map containing an Expedition, locate the central Detonator and the four NPCs. The core gameplay revolves around strategically placing Explosives near various Markers to trigger events:

  • Red Markers: Detonating Explosives near these spawns Runic Monsters. Larger markers yield larger monster packs, enhanced by Unearthed Remnants.
  • Unearthed Remnants: These relics provide beneficial or detrimental modifiers, influencing monster damage or item rarity from Excavated Chests.
  • Black Markers (with spiral symbol): Detonating Explosives near these spawns Excavated Chests, containing Artifacts, Logbooks, currencies, Waystones, and high-tier gear.

The Explosives UI shows the area of effect (AoE). For optimal farming, avoid overlapping AoE circles to maximize marker activation. After placing Explosives, interact with the Detonator to initiate the event. If overwhelmed, retreat and return later; the event persists even when you leave the area.

Conquering the Expedition Pinnacle Map

Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests have a chance to drop Expedition Logbooks. These are used with Dannig in your hideout to access the Expedition Pinnacle Map. Slot the Logbook, click "Open Portals," and enter a significantly larger Expedition with triple the Explosives.

This Pinnacle Map features Olroth, a challenging boss (indicated by a skull on the minimap). Defeating Olroth is crucial for obtaining Expedition Passive Skill Tree points (2x points per victory).

Enhancing Your Expedition with the Passive Skill Tree

The Expedition Passive Skill Tree, accessible via the Atlas Passive Skill Tree menu, offers significant boosts to rewards and difficulty. It features Notable nodes and difficulty-increasing nodes.

Here's a breakdown of Notable nodes and recommendations:

Notable Expedition Passive Effect Requirements Recommendation
Extreme Archaeology Reduces Explosives to 1, but boosts radius, placement range, and reduces enemy Life N/A Avoid
Disturbed Rest 50% more Runic Monster Flags N/A Prioritize
Detailed Records 50% more Logbooks, Logbooks always spawn with 3x Modifiers Disturbed Rest Prioritize
Timed Detonations 50% more Artifacts, faster Detonation chains N/A Prioritize
Legendary Battles 50% more Rare monsters, 50% more Exotic Coinage Timed Detonations Consider
Frail Treasures 3x more Excavated Chest Markers, but they disappear after 5 seconds N/A Consider
Weight of History 35% boost to Remnant effects N/A Consider
Unearthed Anomalies Remnants gain an additional Suffix and Prefix modifier Weight of History Consider

Prioritize "Disturbed Rest," "Detailed Records," and "Timed Detonations" for significant reward increases. Then consider "Weight of History," "Unearthed Anomalies," and "Legendary Battles" for further enhancements, accepting increased difficulty. Avoid "Extreme Archaeology" due to the significant reduction in Explosives.

Reap the Rewards: Artifacts, Coinage, and Logbooks

Expeditions yield Artifacts (Broken Circle, Black Scythe, Order, Sun), used to trade with specific vendors for gear. Exotic Coinage refreshes vendor inventories.

Expedition Logbooks, obtained from Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests, unlock the Pinnacle Map and the chance to fight Olroth, yielding high-tier currency, exclusive Uniques, and crucial passive skill points. Increasing map difficulty increases Olroth's spawn rate and reward quality.

By mastering these strategies and understanding the Expedition Passive Skill Tree, you'll significantly enhance your endgame experience in Path of Exile 2.
