PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, But No Hole-in-One

A hypothetical poll asking which pro sports game series 2K should tackle next would undoubtedly crown NFL 2K the winner. However, 2K is instead teeing off with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours, it's a promising game.

HB Studios, the developer, has refined its golf game over a decade, culminating in this polished iteration. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking an extensive roster of real-world courses (though it includes the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the gameplay is enjoyable. Minor issues, such as occasional framerate hiccups on PC, didn't detract significantly from the overall experience.

The upgraded EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. The right stick control scheme (for controllers) provides satisfying feedback, allowing for precise shot shaping. Difficulty levels cater to both casual and hardcore players, offering options like a forgiving "Perfect Swing" mode. Lateral movement on the tee box adds a strategic layer. Playing as cover athlete Tiger Woods further enhanced the experience.

MyCareer mode incorporates engaging narrative elements, offering choices that impact stat boosts. Earning VC unlocks gear that also affects stats, alongside skill upgrades through gameplay. The addition of weekly Quests provides ongoing goals.

The MyPlayer creator, though not extensively explored, allows for reasonable character customization, complemented by skill trees. Multiplayer options, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies, promise fun casual gameplay and asynchronous modes for players in different time zones.

PGA Tour 2K25 excels in its consistent competence across all aspects. While this might not generate overwhelming excitement, it's a safe bet for golf enthusiasts and those seeking a relaxing gaming experience. A playable demo is currently available.
