Robert Eggers Set to Helm Labyrinth Sequel

Mar 27,2025 Author: Adam

Renowned director Robert Eggers is set to enchant audiences once again, this time by crafting a sequel to the cherished 1986 dark fantasy film, Labyrinth. Following the success of his gothic horror film Nosferatu, Eggers will take the helm to write and direct this much-anticipated follow-up to Jim Henson's classic, which originally starred David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. Collaborating with Sjón, his partner from The Northman, Eggers aims to bring a fresh yet respectful continuation to the story of the Goblin King Jareth and the labyrinthine world he rules.

Previously, a sequel to Labyrinth was in development with Scott Derrickson, known for Sinister, attached to direct. However, with no progress reported since 2023, TriStar and Jim Henson Pictures have decided to entrust Eggers with the project. In the original film, Jennifer Connelly's character embarks on a perilous journey through a fantastical realm to rescue her baby brother, kidnapped by Bowie's iconic Goblin King, with the aid of memorable Henson puppets.

In addition to the Labyrinth sequel, Eggers is also set to direct Werwulf, a werewolf movie slated for a Christmas 2026 release. Set in 13th century England, the film will feature dialogue in Old English, promising an immersive historical experience. While details are scarce, fans can anticipate a transformation into a wolf monster as a central plot element.

Nosferatu, Eggers' latest release, hit theaters last Christmas and is a reimagining of F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent film. Set in 19th century Germany, it follows a young real estate agent's harrowing journey to Transylvania, where he encounters the mysterious count and triggers a series of vampiric nightmares. The film has garnered significant acclaim, earning four Oscar nominations for Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling.
