Square Enix has officially announced the cancellation of *Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link*, a mobile game that many fans were eagerly anticipating. The news, while surprising to some, did not come as a shock to those familiar with Square Enix's history of game cancellations.
Development on *Missing-Link* began back in 2019, with the team conducting multiple closed beta tests on both Android and iOS. However, despite these efforts and an announcement in November 2024 about a delay, the project has now been abandoned. Participants in the closed beta tests were understandably surprised, given how far along the game seemed to be.
Why Did Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link Get Cancelled?
The development team cited their inability to find a sustainable path forward that would meet player expectations in the long term. *Missing-Link* was designed to be a live-service game, but it seems the team couldn't deliver the experience they envisioned.
The game was intended to be a unique, GPS-based spinoff, allowing players to explore the world and fight Heartless using their keyblades, set within a forgotten chapter of the *Kingdom Hearts* saga. While the concept generated curiosity, especially regarding its GPS features, it ultimately didn't pan out as hoped. Square Enix decided it was better to cancel the project rather than release an underwhelming product, choosing instead to redirect their efforts.

But Kingdom Hearts IV Is Still Coming!
Despite the cancellation of *Missing-Link*, fans can take solace in the fact that *Kingdom Hearts IV* remains in active development. Announced at the *Kingdom Hearts* 20th Anniversary event in 2022, the main series continues to progress. Square Enix has recently provided a small update, confirming that work on *Kingdom Hearts IV* is moving forward steadily.
While the cancellation of *Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link* is disappointing, the ongoing development of *Kingdom Hearts IV* offers hope for fans of the franchise.
