ByteDance Shifts US Publishing to Skystone in Major Overhaul

May 06,2025 Author: Zachary

In a significant shift within the mobile gaming industry, popular titles such as Marvel Snap and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang are transitioning to a new publisher. In the United States, ByteDance has decided to step back from publishing these games, paving the way for Skystone Games to take over. This change comes with the promise of new region-specific versions tailored for the US market.

The backdrop to this transition was the earlier buzz around the TikTok ban, which led to a voluntary offline period for the app. However, in the mobile gaming sector, the real shock was the sudden removal of top-tier games from app stores. This was part of a broader political push to pressure ByteDance into divesting from TikTok, impacting games like Marvel Snap and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. These games were pulled without warning, leaving both teams and players in the lurch.

While TikTok has since resumed operations, the games affected by the ban did not return as swiftly. Marvel Snap, for instance, promptly sought a new publisher and found one in Skystone Games. Skystone now manages nearly all of ByteDance's US-published game releases.

For mobile gamers, this news brings a sigh of relief. It ensures continuity of play or at least the availability of US-specific versions of their beloved games. Yet, there's an underlying unease about games being caught in political crossfires. The situation underscores the vulnerability of mobile games to political decisions.

As the deadline for ByteDance to sell TikTok approaches, the industry watches closely. The political handling of apps could set precedents that impact the future of mobile gaming, especially for titles published by companies under similar scrutiny.
