MultiVersus to Shut Down When Season 5 Concludes in May

Apr 03,2025 Author: Jack

Player First Games has announced that Season 5 of MultiVersus will mark the end of the Warner Bros. platform fighting game, concluding on May 30, 2025, at 9 a.m. PST. The studio shared this news through a blog post on its website, signaling the end of support for the crossover brawler. MultiVersus, which debuted on May 28 of the previous year, will kick off Season 5 on February 4, running until its final day in May 2025. At that point, online play will cease, though Player First assures players that all earned and purchased content will remain accessible offline through local and training modes.

"Most importantly, we want to thank every player and person who has ever played or supported MultiVersus," a message from the MultiVersus team reads. "All of us on the Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games teams have poured our heart and soul into this game. We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey."

It's been an incredible ride, MVPs. Thank you for all the support. For more details, please visit our blog post https://t.co/tLVzpA9JaQ and FAQ https://t.co/XKuxAnd26j. pic.twitter.com/VLzBDbP0GQ

Player First has also discontinued real-money transactions for MultiVersus as of today, but fans can still use Gleamium and character tokens to access in-game content until the support ends on May 30. At that time, MultiVersus will be removed from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store.

The decision to end MultiVersus comes after Warner Bros. Discovery labeled the project a significant disappointment. During a financial call in November, the company disclosed that MultiVersus fell far short of expectations, leading to a $100 million writedown in its games sector. This added to the $300 million total after the launch of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in January. Last week, Variety reported that Warner Bros. Games head David Haddad is set to leave the company following a challenging 2024.

"We took another $100 million plus impairment due to the underperforming releases, primarily MultiVersus this quarter, bringing total writedown year-to-date to over $300 million in our games business, a key factor in this year’s studio profit decline,” said chief financial officer Gunnar Wiedenfels during the November call.

Despite the news of the game's closure just days after its one-year anniversary, Season 5 promises to go out with a flourish. In addition to typical seasonal updates, new characters Lola Bunny and Aquaman will join the fray. Lola Bunny, the Looney Toons icon, will be unlockable as a daily calendar reward, while the DC superhero Aquaman will be available through the battle pass starting next week.
