"Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Features Revealed by Patent"

The Nintendo Switch 2 has been generating buzz, and while official details are still under wraps, recent patents shed light on some intriguing changes, particularly to the Joy-Cons. Reports suggest that the Switch 2's Joy-Cons will attach magnetically and may even function like a computer mouse, a feature now seemingly confirmed by Nintendo's latest patents.
According to the patent, "This game controller is detachably mounted to a body device that has a recess, that comprises a first magnet and a second magnet at the bottom of the recess, and that can execute game processing." The patent further elaborates on the detachment mechanism, stating that two buttons on the top surface of the Joy-Con protrusion need to be pressed to detach the controllers. "The first button and the second button are provided in the longitudinal direction in the top surface of the protrusion," it reads. "The first button is attracted to the first magnet by a magnetic force. The second button is attracted to the second magnet by a magnetic force."
The patents also include illustrations showing the Joy-Cons being used in a mouse-like configuration. Players can hold the controller railside down, using the shoulder buttons as mouse buttons, with R1 and R2 acting as the left and right mouse buttons respectively. There's also a suggestion of a scrolling function using the joysticks.
Further illustrations demonstrate various ways to utilize this mouse-like function, such as a dual-mouse configuration or using one Joy-Con as a mouse while the other functions as a standard game controller.
The magnetic attachment of the Joy-Cons was one of the earliest rumors about the Switch 2, followed by the mouse-like functionality. Although not yet officially confirmed, a teaser released in January hinted at this feature, showing the Joy-Cons gliding across a surface like a computer mouse.
