Asus ROG Ally Z1 Extreme Gaming Handheld: $449.99
Original Price: $649.99 Discounted Price: $449.99 (31% off) at Best Buy
The Asus ROG Ally Z1 Extreme is a Windows 11 gaming handheld PC. This high-end model boasts an AMD Zen 4 based Z1 Extreme CPU, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD. It features a vibrant 7" 1080p display with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate.
Unlike the Linux-based Steam Deck, the ROG Ally runs on Windows 11, offering compatibility with virtually all major game launchers: Steam, Battle.net, Xbox Game Pass, Epic Games Store, GOG, Ubisoft Connect, and more. This broad compatibility makes it ideal for gamers who enjoy titles beyond Steam's ecosystem.
In our review, the ROG Ally was praised as a portable Xbox Game Pass powerhouse. While some drawbacks exist (user experience, battery life, lack of Steam Deck-style touchpads), its 1080p screen, powerful specs, and attractive price point make it a compelling Steam Deck alternative.
Upcoming Competition: Note that the handheld gaming market is heating up. The Lenovo Legion Go S is on the horizon, with a Windows 11 version (Z2 Go CPU, 32GB RAM) launching in January 2025 at $729, and a more affordable 16GB RAM version (Windows 11 or SteamOS) arriving in May 2025 for $599. The Asus ROG Ally X, released in 2024, also offers superior performance but at a significantly higher price.
