Capcom has subtly hinted at the next installment in the Resident Evil series, potentially titled Resident Evil 9, through a celebratory video released on April 25, 2025. The video, uploaded to social media by the Resident Evil 4 development team to commemorate reaching 10 million players, features a mix of characters and scenes, culminating in a surprising tease.
The video begins with Ada Wong engaging in a conversation with a notorious villain, followed by a scene where Leon is surrounded by infected enemies wearing party hats, humorously advancing towards a church. The tone shifts as the song transitions to a rock number, with Dr. Salvador playfully strumming his chainsaw like a guitar. The camera then focuses on Leon, who pumps his fist in the air in front of a rustic "Thank you for playing" sign.
However, eagle-eyed fans noticed something peculiar when the sign is turned sideways: the wooden planks form the Roman numeral "IX," which is 9 in Arabic numerals. This has sparked speculation about Resident Evil 9. The absence of a lower plank on the sign in earlier scenes of the video, as noted by horror game leaker Dusk Golem, suggests this was no mere coincidence but a deliberate hint from Capcom.
Social media reactions were swift and intrigued, with one user exclaiming, "I know what you did here," accompanied by a wide-eyed emoji, indicating the community's surprise and excitement about the potential tease.
Adding fuel to the speculation, Capcom has confirmed that the next mainline entry in the Resident Evil series will be directed by Koshi Nakanishi, the director of Resident Evil 7. Nakanishi has previously expressed the challenge of deciding the direction after Resident Evil 7 but hinted at a substantial concept he's working on, set possibly on an island inspired by Singapore, though details remain under wraps.
