The upcoming Narnia reboot, helmed by Greta Gerwig, who wrote and directed the successful Barbie movie, has added Carey Mulligan to its expanding cast. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mulligan will be joined by former James Bond actor Daniel Craig, Sex Education's Emma Mackey, and the legendary Meryl Streep.
Gerwig, taking on both writing and directing duties, is set to bring a fresh perspective to C.S. Lewis' iconic fantasy series, The Chronicles of Narnia. The new film will adapt the series' prequel novel, The Magician's Nephew, which unfolds prior to the events of the well-known tale, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Carey Mulligan, known for her multiple award nominations including Oscars, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes, will portray Mabel Kirke, the mother of the story's young protagonist, Digory. Daniel Craig will take on the role of the titular magician and Digory's uncle. Emma Mackey will play a younger version of the infamous White Witch, while Meryl Streep will lend her voice to the character of Aslan, the series' revered talking lion.
This isn't the first time the world of Narnia has been brought to the big screen. Previous adaptations between 2005 and 2010 covered the first three books by C.S. Lewis: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Those films starred Tilda Swinton as the White Witch and Liam Neeson as the voice of Aslan.
Following the success of her 2023 film Barbie, which starred Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling and garnered eight Academy Award nominations, including a win for Best Original Song, Gerwig is set to make a significant impact with this new Narnia project.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician's Nephew is slated for release in 2026.
