Destiny 2's Year of Prophecy: Key Details for Guardians

Get ready, Guardians! Bungie has just unveiled an exciting lineup for its sci-fi shooter, Destiny 2, under the banner of the "Year of Prophecy." This year promises to deliver four major content updates, including two paid expansions and two significant updates accessible to all players, both paying and free.

The year kicks off with the "Rite of the Nine," a free update that introduces a fresh take on dungeon diving. This update is available now and caters to both seasoned dungeon crawlers and newcomers alike. Familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep will feature unique twists, allowing players to reconnect with Orin and explore refreshed dungeon weapons.

Mark your calendars for July 15, as Destiny 2's new expansion, "The Edge of Fate," launches. This expansion marks the beginning of a multiyear saga centered around the mysterious Nine, who predate the Traveler. Players will meet new ally Lodi and the Warlock Vanguard, Ikora, as they explore the new destination, Kepler. This location is inspired by the puzzle-solving and pathfinding challenges of Destiny 2's dungeons, encouraging deep exploration and player-driven discovery. Expect new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.

Alongside the expansion, major core game innovations will be introduced on July 15. These include revamped armor and gear systems designed to enhance buildcrafting opportunities, and a new activity selection screen called the Portal. This screen allows players to choose between Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the newly introduced Solo Ops, tailored for those who prefer playing alone. The update also brings 50 new modifiers for deeper gameplay customization and curated activity rotations to keep the game fresh and engaging.

Following "The Edge of Fate," the "Ash & Iron" update will go live on September 9, with the second expansion, "Renegades," launching on December 2. The year concludes with the "Shadow & Order" update on March 3.

"Destiny 2: Renegades" draws inspiration from the legendary Star Wars universe, merging Destiny's storytelling and gameplay with iconic sci-fi elements. This news comes as a welcome relief to many players, especially following Bungie's layoffs of 220 staff members in July 2024, less than a year after another round of 100 layoffs.

While Destiny 2 keeps Bungie busy, the studio is also working on the reboot of its classic franchise, Marathon, revealed in May 2023. In IGN's hands-on preview, we noted, "After playing enough Marathon to get a pretty good feel for it in its alpha state, I’m already fairly confident it’ll scratch the Bungie PvP itch that’s been left unscratched for a number of years now. Here’s hoping they’ll knock it out of the park when it comes to PC and consoles in September."
