Legendary actor Eddie Murphy is stepping back in front of the camera for an exciting new project. The comedy star recently confirmed he will take on a key role in an upcoming Pink Panther movie.
"I'm going to be Inspector Clouseau in the next Pink Panther," Murphy shared during a July 28 appearance on the Today show. "That's right, I'm the new Clouseau."
Co-anchor Al Roker asked if he would portray the famous detective with a French accent. Murphy replied, "Possibly. He needs to be French, but he could have Haitian roots. One thing's for certain: he's Black. Definitely Black."
Initial reports in May 2023 indicated Murphy was negotiating to star in a Pink Panther reboot directed by Jeff Fowler, known for Sonic the Hedgehog. However, that earlier iteration faced developmental hurdles. Specific details about the newly mentioned project remain scarce for now, leaving fans to await further updates.
The original Pink Panther film debuted in 1963. The bumbling yet crucial Inspector Clouseau was first portrayed by Peter Sellers, who returned for five sequels. Following Sellers' death in 1980, Steve Martin assumed the role for two films in the 2000s: 2006's The Pink Panther and its 2009 sequel, The Pink Panther 2.
Murphy is also currently involved in Shrek 5, scheduled for a Christmas 2025 theatrical release. His action-comedy The Pickup premieres on Prime Video on August 6.
