Faker's Legendary Status Solidified
The League of Legends World Championship dominated 2024's esports narrative. T1, led by the phenomenal Faker, secured their fifth world title. This victory transcended mere statistics; it was a testament to resilience. T1 faced relentless DDoS attacks throughout the year, severely hampering their practice and almost costing them their Worlds qualification. Their triumphant return, particularly Faker's masterful performance in the grand final against Bilibili Gaming, cemented his legacy as an unparalleled esports icon.
Induction into the Hall of Legends
Prior to Worlds 2024, Faker achieved another monumental milestone: induction into Riot Games' official Hall of Legends. This inaugural entry, celebrated with a premium in-game bundle, marked a significant step in publisher-backed esports recognition, promising a more sustainable future for such honors.
Donk's Meteoric Rise in Counter-Strike
While Faker reigned supreme in League of Legends, 2024 saw the emergence of a new esports superstar: 17-year-old Siberian prodigy, Donk. His aggressive Counter-Strike gameplay, characterized by exceptional aim and mobility, propelled Team Spirit to victory at the Shanghai Major, earning him the coveted Player of the Year award—a remarkable feat for a rookie.
Copenhagen Major's Chaotic Aftermath
The Copenhagen Major cast a shadow over Counter-Strike's year. A disruptive protest by a virtual casino against a competitor resulted in stage invasion and trophy damage. This incident heightened security concerns and triggered a Coffeezilla investigation, exposing questionable practices within the industry, potentially leading to legal ramifications.
Apex Legends Plagued by Hacking
The ALGS Apex Legends tournament suffered a significant blow from hackers who remotely compromised players' PCs. This incident, coupled with a game-breaking bug, highlighted serious issues within Apex Legends, causing player attrition and raising concerns about the game's future.
Saudi Arabia's Dominating Esports Presence
Saudi Arabia's influence on the esports landscape continued to expand. The Esports World Cup 2024, a two-month extravaganza encompassing 20 disciplines and substantial prize pools, showcased their commitment. The success of Falcons Esports, a Saudi Arabian organization, in the club championship, underscored the impact of their investment and strategic support.
Mobile Legends' Ascent, Dota 2's Decline
2024 presented contrasting fortunes for two prominent titles. Mobile Legends: Bang Bang's M6 World Championship attracted massive viewership, second only to League of Legends, demonstrating its global growth despite limited Western penetration. Conversely, Dota 2 experienced a downturn, with The International generating less hype and smaller prize pools, reflecting a shift away from crowdfunding models.
