The visual similarities between The Expanse: Osiris Reborn and the Mass Effect series are so striking that many gamers are already dubbing it "Mass Effect: The Expanse." The debut trailer and initial gameplay details make this comparison clear. To the developers' credit, Owlcat Games is quite transparent about their source of inspiration.
In a discussion with IGN, creative director Alexander Mishulin and head of publishing Andrey Tsvetkov openly acknowledge BioWare's iconic sci-fi series as a key influence on their project. However, they emphasize that Osiris Reborn aims to be much more than a simple clone.
For dedicated fans of The Expanse, Osiris Reborn is particularly thrilling as it presents a new narrative featuring the return of several actors from the beloved Prime Video series. While Owlcat remains tight-lipped about specific casting details, the confirmation alone offers something new for the show's devoted audience since its conclusion in 2022.
Personally, my excitement for The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is even greater. As an avid Mass Effect enthusiast, a fan of The Expanse, and an admirer of Owlcat’s work on the excellent cRPG Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, this project seems to align perfectly with my interests.
The central question remains: does Osiris Reborn successfully blend elements from Mass Effect, The Expanse, and Warhammer 40,000 into a compelling whole? Continue reading to discover just how much of Mass Effect's essence is woven into The Expanse: Osiris Reborn.
