Microsoft has recently announced that the highly anticipated reboot of the Fable series, originally slated for a 2025 release, will now launch in 2026. This decision was shared by Craig Duncan, the head of Xbox Game Studios, during the latest episode of the Xbox Podcast. Duncan, who previously led Rare and took over his current role last fall, expressed enthusiasm about the progress made by UK studio Playground, known for their critically acclaimed Forza Horizon series.

Duncan emphasized the importance of giving the team more time to ensure the game meets the high expectations set by fans. He reassured the community that this delay will result in a superior gaming experience, highlighting Playground's track record of delivering beautiful, award-winning games with a 92 Metacritic score on average. He described the new Fable as a visually stunning take on the franchise, infused with British humor and set in a beautifully realized version of Albion.

Alongside the delay announcement, Microsoft unveiled a 50-second pre-alpha gameplay trailer. The footage showcased various elements of the game, including combat with different weapons like a one-handed sword, a two-handed hammer, and a two-handed sword, as well as a fireball magic attack. The trailer also featured scenes of the main character navigating a fantasy-styled forest on horseback and engaging in humorous interactions, such as kicking a chicken. A notable cutscene depicted the protagonist setting a trap with sausages to lure and subsequently battle a werewolf-like creature.

First announced in 2020 as a "new beginning" for the series, the Fable reboot has been progressively revealed to the public. The 2023 Xbox Game Showcase introduced the game with a trailer featuring Richard Ayoade from The IT Crowd, and last year's Xbox Showcase in June 2024 provided another glimpse into the game's world.

This upcoming title marks the first mainline Fable game since Fable 3 in 2010 and is poised to be one of Xbox Game Studios' most significant releases. Duncan's confidence in Playground's vision for Fable suggests that fans can look forward to a game that not only honors the legacy of the franchise but also pushes the boundaries of what players can expect from the series.
