Marvel Studios has just unveiled the final trailer for 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps.' This trailer features speaking lines from Julia Garner's Silver Surfer and offers a clearer look at Ralph Ineson's Galactus. While the trailer deliberately avoids showing Galactus's face—despite merchandise having already revealed it—it powerfully conveys the immense scale and looming threat posed by this ravenous villain.
In fact, the trailer appears to hint at the specific method Galactus plans to use to devour Earth. A single, crucial shot provides the clue. Read on to discover how Galactus intends to consume the home planet of the Fantastic Four.
How Does Galactus Plan to Devour Earth?
The final trailer includes a mysterious shot of a colossal device in Paris. This structure, made of strange, arcing metal, seems to be projecting energy into the atmosphere. Is this one of Reed Richards' creations? Likely not. Evidence suggests this device is central to Galactus's plan for consuming the planet.
This appears to be one of several Elemental Converters. In the comics, Galactus typically employs a device called an Elemental Converter to aid in consuming planets. Despite his enormous size, he cannot simply swallow a planet whole. The Elemental Converter breaks down a planet's matter and organic material, transforming it into energy to satisfy his endless hunger. While the Devourer of Worlds might occasionally resort to literally biting a planet, that isn't his standard method of preparation.
The trailer likely shows these Elemental Converters in operation. We can infer that Galactus and Julia Garner's Silver Surfer have deployed these arc-like devices at key locations worldwide to begin converting Earth into sustenance. Therefore, if Reed Richards and his family hope to stop Galactus, they must target these machines and cut off his energy supply.
This is not Galactus's usual method. Art by Neal Adams. (Image Credit: Marvel)Will they succeed? This is the central question heading into 'First Steps' (alongside inquiries about Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom). Something must compel the Fantastic Four to leave their home universe and enter the MCU. A post-credits scene in 'The New Avengers' already shows them fleeing to a new world. Could they be escaping Earth's destruction by Galactus? This is a compelling possibility and would be a surprising, yet intriguing, conclusion to the Fantastic Four's inaugural MCU film.
