11 bit studios has exciting news for fans of the Frostpunk series: they've announced Frostpunk 1886, a highly anticipated remake of the original game, set to launch in 2027. This announcement comes just over six months after the release of Frostpunk 2, and nearly a decade after the debut of the first Frostpunk in 2018.

For this project, the Polish developer is harnessing the power of Unreal Engine 5, marking a significant shift from their proprietary Liquid Engine, which powered both the original Frostpunk and This War of Mine. This new engine choice reflects the studio's commitment to enhancing the legacy of the first game with cutting-edge technology.

Frostpunk is renowned for its unique setting in an alternate history of the late 19th century, where players must build and manage a city amidst a global volcanic winter. The game challenges players to make tough survival decisions, manage resources, and explore the harsh environment for survivors and essential supplies.

IGN's review of the original Frostpunk awarded it a stellar 9/10, praising its blend of thematic ideas and gameplay elements into a unique strategy game, despite some occasional unintuitive mechanics. Frostpunk 2, while still well-received, scored an 8/10, noted for its larger scale and increased social and political complexity, though it lost some of the original's intimacy.

11 bit studios has confirmed that they will continue to support Frostpunk 2 with free major content updates, a console launch, and additional DLCs, even as they work on Frostpunk 1886. The new game, named to honor a crucial moment in the Frostpunk universe—the Great Storm's descent upon New London—promises more than just a visual upgrade. It will expand on the original with new content, mechanics, laws, and an entirely new Purpose path, ensuring a fresh experience for both new and veteran players.

The transition to Unreal Engine 5 not only enhances the visual and gameplay experience but also introduces long-awaited mod support, fulfilling a key community request that was previously unattainable due to the limitations of the original engine. This move also paves the way for future DLC content, making Frostpunk 1886 a living, expandable platform.

11 bit studios envisions a future where Frostpunk 2 and Frostpunk 1886 evolve together, each offering a unique path through the unforgiving cold of their world. Alongside these projects, the studio is also preparing for the release of The Alters in June, promising a busy and exciting period ahead for fans of their work.
