Andy Serkis has shared a few intriguing insights about *The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum*, teasing that the upcoming film will deliver something both “surprising” and familiar to fans. Promising a tone and atmosphere that aligns closely with Peter Jackson’s iconic trilogy, Serkis aims to bring back the same emotional depth and cinematic richness that made Middle-earth so unforgettable on screen.
Scheduled for release on December 17, 2027, *The Hunt for Gollum* marks Serkis’ return to one of his most iconic roles—Gollum—whom he first portrayed in Jackson’s *The Lord of the Rings* trilogy and later in *The Hobbit* series. This new film will explore the mysterious years between *The Hobbit* and *The Fellowship of the Ring*, shedding light on Gollum’s journey during that time. As director and lead actor, Serkis is deeply invested in ensuring the film feels authentic to Tolkien’s world while delivering fresh storytelling.
In a recent interview with Collider promoting his new film *Animal Farm*, Serkis gave fans a brief update on the production timeline:
“We're very early on in the process,” he explained. “We've been talking about the film over the course of the last year. We’re about to start a period of prep in the next few months or so. We will be shooting in the early to mid-part of next year, I guess, and then it'll be as long as it takes to shoot, which — it's a sizable movie — all ready for a December 2027 release.
“I'm incredibly excited to go back and work with my friends and family in New Zealand and actually do something which is, I think, going to be surprising, and yet very much part of the lore and the feel of the trilogy. The sensibility of it will feel, I think, close to that, and yet we're investigating in greater depth the character formerly known as Smeagol, but mostly known as Gollum.”
Serkis' remarks suggest that *The Hunt for Gollum* will not only honor the legacy of the original trilogy but also delve deeper into Gollum’s complex psyche, offering audiences a richer understanding of his fractured identity and motivations. While details remain scarce, the film is expected to feature appearances from other beloved characters. Sir Ian McKellen, who portrayed Gandalf, has expressed interest in reprising his role, provided his schedule and physical condition allow it. Similarly, Viggo Mortensen, who played Aragorn, has shown openness to returning to Middle-earth.

Warner Bros. has confirmed that *The Hunt for Gollum* is just the beginning of a new wave of Middle-earth films penned by Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens. These projects aim to expand upon J.R.R. Tolkien’s expansive mythology, continuing to build on the cinematic universe that captured global audiences.
Meanwhile, Amazon continues to enrich the world of *The Lord of the Rings* through its Prime Video series *The Rings of Power*, with Season 3 currently in development. Additionally, the animated prequel *The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim* was released in December, further extending the franchise across multiple formats and eras.
