GTA 6 Mapping Project Surges with Trailer 2: 'Information Overload'

The GTA 6 mapping project has surged into high gear following the release of Trailer 2, with one of its key members telling IGN that "it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year." The GTA 6 Mapping Discord community, currently boasting 370 members and soon to surpass 400, is abuzz with excitement as they delve into the wealth of new details unveiled in the trailer.

"It's an information overload - it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year," said Garza, who manages the Discord server, in an interview with IGN. "We have so much new content to work on and we're really just getting started."

The GTA 6 Mapping Discord was established in the wake of the significant leaks from September 2022, which some believe Rockstar subtly referenced at the beginning of Trailer 2. Initially, the project relied on these leaks and the content from December 2023's Trailer 1 to construct the most accurate map possible. However, the latest map version, released by project lead DuPz0r at the end of March, is now considered outdated due to the extensive new information provided by Trailer 2.

In addition to confirming plot details, characters, and releasing 70 new screenshots, Rockstar provided insights and visuals of various explorable locations within the state of Leonida, GTA 6's rendition of Florida. Confirmed locations from this week's reveal include Vice City, mirroring Miami, the tropical Leonida Keys archipelago, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and the national landmark Mount Kalaga, situated along the state's northern border.

The volunteers are meticulously analyzing the trailer to pinpoint the exact locations of all depicted elements, striving to align images of fictional settings with their real-world inspirations. This effort aims to refine GTA 6's map further. Once completed, DuPz0r plans to release an updated map, which fans eagerly anticipate as their most detailed preview of what GTA 6 will offer upon its release in May 2026.

Should Rockstar release additional GTA 6 assets or gameplay footage in the interim, the volunteers are prepared to revisit their work. Only upon the game's release will they be able to compare their fan-made map with the actual game to assess the accuracy of their efforts.

In March, a modder who created a playable version of the GTA 6 map within GTA 5 was forced to halt their project following a takedown notice from Take-Two. This mod was based on the GTA 6 mapping project.

When asked last year about potential action from Take-Two, Garza expressed "some mild concern." He elaborated, "This project has been going on for quite some time with no direct disruption to our community. However, I always keep it into consideration if they intend on communicating with us in the future for any reason. We do not explicitly showcase leaked material in the map, so I do not believe they would take that down in particular. I believe they are aware that this project gathers popularity and interest in the game, since everyone wants to see how the world may look like. This can be one of the reasons why they haven’t done anything, since it’s not too negative. If I were ever in the situation of receiving a cease and desist though, then I would respectfully cease and desist. As we get closer to a precise map, it may be possible to receive that notice in the future."
