Xbox's upcoming Developer Direct will unveil four games, with the fourth remaining a secret. Hints suggest it's a new installment in a renowned Japanese franchise.
Next week's Developer Direct, Xbox's third annual showcase, will feature three confirmed titles: Doom: The Dark Ages, South of Midnight, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. However, the identity of the fourth game is shrouded in mystery, sparking much speculation among fans. Initial guesses ranged from Fable and The Outer Worlds 2 to Gears of War: E-Day.
Industry insider Jez Corden provided a clue, stating the mystery game is a "new entry in a legendary Japanese IP with decades of history," suggesting it's not from an Xbox first-party studio.
Several possibilities have emerged. While Square Enix's presence at last year's Direct makes another appearance plausible, a new Final Fantasy title seems unlikely due to ongoing PlayStation partnerships and recent major releases.
Other contenders include Capcom's Resident Evil, particularly Resident Evil 9, which is rumored to be in development. Sega's Persona 6, also rumored for a 2025 release, is another possibility, especially considering Xbox's marketing partnership with Sega for Metaphor: ReFantazio. A Ninja Gaiden revival from Team Ninja is also a strong contender, given the franchise's historical ties to Xbox.
Ultimately, all are speculative. Xbox fans must tune in to the Developer Direct on Thursday, January 23rd to uncover the mystery.
