The future of Batman films remains uncertain as DC Studios faces creative challenges balancing multiple versions of the Dark Knight. DC Universe co-chief James Gunn recently acknowledged: "Batman's my biggest issue in all of DC right now."
Dueling Batmen Cause Scheduling Headaches
Gunn and DC co-chair Peter Safran confirmed The Brave and the Bold will introduce a new Batman actor to their shared universe, definitively separating Robert Pattinson's incarnation from the DCU. Pattinson will exclusively portray Batman in Matt Reeves' standalone The Batman Epic Crime Saga, continuing with the delayed sequel The Batman - Part 2 now scheduled for October 2027.
This five-year gap between Pattinson's Batman appearances raises questions about the timing for The Brave and the Bold, potentially creating audience confusion with two simultaneous Batman franchises.
Gunn Addresses Key Batman Questions
In a Rolling Stone interview, Gunn addressed several pressing Batman issues:
Confirmed Pattinson won't crossover between universes ("not likely at all")
Denied rumors about The Batman Part 2's cancellation
Described Reeves' sequel as moving slowly without a finished script
"Let him take his time," Gunn advocated regarding Reeves' pace. "God, people are mean. Let him do his thing, man."
The Brave and the Bold Development Update
Currently in active development, The Brave and the Bold faces its own hurdles:
Potential director Andy Muschietti awaiting final script
Gunn personally overseeing script development
Clear priority alongside Wonder Woman projects
Gunn emphasized crafting meaningful distinctions between versions: "Batman can't just exist because he's Warner Bros.' biggest character... He needs proper purpose within the DCU while differing from Matt's version."
First Look at DCU's Batman

Gunn explained the deliberately vague portrayal ensures creative flexibility while establishing Batman's existing DCU presence: "This is the DCU Batman... We'll do great things with him alongside Superman."
The comments suggest future Batman/Superman team-ups, with Gunn promising: "I can't wait for people to see more of them together."
