Mahershala Ali has provided several updates regarding Marvel's long-delayed Blade film while promoting his new movie Jurassic World Rebirth - none of them particularly encouraging.
Blade was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019 and was originally slated for release this November. However, the troubled production has gone through multiple directors, and six years after its announcement, Mahershala Ali's Blade remains stalled in development limbo.
It's been eight months since Blade was removed from Marvel's release calendar, with the studio yet to announce a new premiere date. Shortly after the film's scheduling disappearance, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige affirmed their commitment to the project.
"We're dedicated to bringing Blade to life," Feige stated during an interview with Omelete in November 2024. "We adore the character and Mahershala's interpretation. While we're reevaluating its place in our slate, rest assured Blade will join the MCU when the time is right."
When pressed for updates by Variety, Ali offered a frustratingly brief response: "Call Marvel. I'm ready. Let them know I'm ready." His comments to The Hollywood Reporter were marginally more revealing yet equally discouraging:
"I'd love for Blade to happen, but it's unclear where Marvel stands currently," Ali admitted. "Right now I'm focused on finding my next compelling role."

Several attached creatives have openly discussed the project's collapse. In April, musician Flying Lotus revealed on X/Twitter he'd been tapped to compose for Blade before its cancellation: "I doubt it'll revive at this point, but scoring Blade would've been incredible."
Costume designer Ruth E. Carter (Sinners) disclosed on The John Campea Show she'd begun designing 1920s-era outfits for the stalled production. Actor Delroy Lindo echoed these sentiments in his Entertainment Weekly interview:
"Marvel initially welcomed my creative input," Lindo recalled. "The collaborative energy surrounding Blade was thrilling before everything derailed inexplicably."

The Blade discourse resurfaces as Deadpool & Wolverine dominates box offices with $1.3 billion globally, featuring Wesley Snipes' brief Blade cameo. Ryan Reynolds advocates for Snipes' original vampire hunter to receive a proper farewell film:
"Blade pioneered modern superhero cinema," Reynolds tweeted. "He's Marvel's founding father. Let's give him the Logan-style sendoff he deserves."
