The temporary US shutdown of TikTok on January 19th unexpectedly impacted Marvel Snap, the popular card game published by Nuverse (a ByteDance subsidiary). This disruption, lasting approximately 24 hours, highlighted the political vulnerabilities inherent in the game's current publishing arrangement.
While Marvel Snap is now back online, full functionality, including in-app purchases, remains under restoration. In response to this incident, developers Second Dinner Studios announced plans to explore alternative publishers and transition certain services in-house, as revealed on Platform X.
This strategic shift aims to mitigate future disruptions stemming from the precarious political landscape surrounding TikTok. The app's 90-day extension to finalize a 50% stake sale to a US entity leaves Marvel Snap vulnerable to further blockages should the deal fail.
The sudden outage caused significant player frustration, particularly due to the lack of prior warning. Many users continued making in-game purchases unaware of the impending service interruption. While PC players could still access the game via Steam, widespread authorization issues plagued other platforms.
Second Dinner Studios assures players that Marvel Snap is not going anywhere, emphasizing their commitment to swift restoration of full service. They've pledged to provide ongoing updates on their progress. The statement on Platform X reads: “Marvel Snap is here to stay. We're working hard to restore the game as quickly as possible, and we'll keep players informed of our progress.”
