Netflix has officially announced the closure of its interactive fiction games under the Netflix Stories banner, marking the end of a brief yet intriguing experiment in narrative gaming. This decision might come as a surprise to many, given that the games boasted a solid player base. So, what led to the cancellation of Netflix Stories? Let's dive in and find out the full story!
The news, initially confirmed by Variety, is part of a larger strategic pivot at Netflix Games. The focus is shifting towards mobile titles, including party games, kids' games, mainstream releases, and more interactive experiences that can be enjoyed on TV.
Despite the end of Netflix Stories, Boss Fight Entertainment, the studio behind the series, will continue to collaborate with Netflix on other projects, such as the upcoming Squid Game: Unleashed.
Is Netflix Stories Shutting Down?
Despite facing some criticism, the Netflix Stories games consistently ranked among the most-played titles on the Netflix platform. Recent reports place it at the fourth spot in Netflix Games' top 10 carousel, which measures player engagement rather than just downloads.
Looking at the future of the series, the last interactive title to be released will be Love Is Blind: NYC. After its rollout, Netflix will cease the development of new Netflix Stories games. This announcement comes shortly after the Netflix Stories app began teasing its next game, The Love Contract, originally slated for an April 8th release.
Unlike previous entries, The Love Contract was not tied to any existing Netflix IP. It promised an original romance story about an actress navigating a complex relationship between a Hollywood star and a billionaire, filled with fame, scandal, and the drama of fake dating. Unfortunately, this game has now been scrapped.
While new developments are halted, existing Netflix Stories games will remain accessible. Players can still enjoy titles like Love Is Blind, Emily in Paris, Money Heist, Love Is Blind: Winter's Kiss, Perfect Match, Sex Education, Selling Sunset, Sweet Magnolias, Virgin River, and The Perfect Couple. However, planned sequels such as Outer Banks and Ginny & Georgia have been cancelled.
So, that's the latest scoop on Netflix Stories! If you're a fan of Netflix shows, you might want to check out the game on the Google Play Store.
