Existing purchases remain unaffected.
Nintendo recommends obtaining a Japanese-issued credit card, although this presents a significant hurdle for non-residents. A more readily available alternative involves purchasing Japanese Nintendo eShop gift cards from online retailers like Amazon JP and PlayAsia. These cards allow users to add funds to their accounts without providing personal location details.
With a Nintendo Direct scheduled for April 2, 2025, focusing on the Nintendo Switch 2, further clarification on this policy and potential future changes might be revealed. The impact of this restriction on international fans remains a significant concern.
