Effective March 25, 2025, Nintendo is prohibiting the use of foreign credit cards and PayPal accounts on its Japanese eShop and My Nintendo Store. This new policy, announced on January 30, 2025, aims to combat fraudulent activity. While Nintendo hasn't detailed the specifics of the fraud prevention, the change impacts international consumers significantly.
This decision prevents overseas users from directly purchasing Japanese-exclusive games and taking advantage of potentially lower prices due to favorable exchange rates. Popular titles unavailable elsewhere, including Yo-kai Watch 1 (Switch port), Famicom Wars, Super Robot Wars T, Mother 3, and various Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem titles, are now inaccessible to many international players. Existing purchases remain unaffected.
Nintendo recommends obtaining a Japanese-issued credit card, although this presents a significant hurdle for non-residents. A more readily available alternative involves purchasing Japanese Nintendo eShop gift cards from online retailers like Amazon JP and PlayAsia. These cards allow users to add funds to their accounts without providing personal location details.
With a Nintendo Direct scheduled for April 2, 2025, focusing on the Nintendo Switch 2, further clarification on this policy and potential future changes might be revealed. The impact of this restriction on international fans remains a significant concern.
