Nintendo has provided fans with a first detailed glimpse of a Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridge, just ahead of the console's eagerly anticipated launch next month. The latest video from Nintendo's Nintendo Today app showcases the official Switch 2 carry case, which features slots designed to safely store up to six Nintendo Switch 1 and Switch 2 cartridges.
As previously announced, Switch 2 cartridges maintain the same dimensions and shape as their Switch 1 counterparts, ensuring that the new console requires only one cartridge slot to play games from both generations. However, there's a notable distinction: the color of the cartridge. Switch 2 cartridges are distinctively red, a choice that seems to be consistent across all titles, not limited to the Mario Kart World cartridge featured in the video. If you haven't downloaded the Nintendo Today app, you can catch the video shared by OatmealDome on X/Twitter.
The top of the cartridge's label displays a Switch 2 logo, differentiating it from the original Nintendo Switch design on the first generation cartridges. The official Switch 2 carrying case accommodates the console with the Joy-Con 2 attached, six game cartridges, and two Joy-Con 2 straps. As expected, the Switch 2 cartridges are identical in size to those of the Switch 1.
In a quirky touch, Switch 2 cartridges retain the same unpleasant-tasting coating that Nintendo uses to prevent players from putting them in their mouths. Takuhiro Dohta, director of the Switch 2, explained to GameSpot, "We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption. We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."

The Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled to hit the market on June 5, 2025, just three weeks away. Earlier today, a report surfaced indicating that Nintendo's primary electronics partner, Samsung, is already considering a hardware refresh for the Switch 2, potentially featuring an upgraded OLED screen.
