Nintendo Switch 2 Direct: 7 Biggest Surprises

Apr 21,2025 Author: Peyton

New video game hardware announcements can feel somewhat predictable. Each new console generation typically brings better graphics, faster load times, and fresh iterations of iconic franchises like those involving a certain plumber and his turtle adversaries. Even Nintendo, known for its innovation across generations—from the N64's analog controller to the tiny GameCube discs, the wacky Wii motion controls and Virtual Console, the Wii U's tablet screen, and the Switch's built-in portability—has followed this trend with the Switch 2.

However, true to its nature, Nintendo unveiled a few unexpected features during the Switch 2 Direct.

It's 2025 and We Finally Get Online Play

As a lifelong Nintendo enthusiast since the days of pretending to be Mario dodging footballs like Donkey Kong's barrels at age four in 1983, I can say with a mix of joy and long-suffering frustration that discussing this exciting reveal without a hint of bitterness is tough. Nintendo's online play has historically been lackluster compared to the robust platforms of Sony and Xbox, often making it difficult to connect and communicate with friends. Even the original Switch required a separate app for voice chat.

The Switch 2 Direct brought a surprising change with the introduction of GameChat, which promises a seamless four-player chat experience. It supports noise suppression, video cameras for face-to-face interaction, and screen sharing across consoles, allowing you to monitor up to four different displays simultaneously. GameChat also features text-to-voice and voice-to-text capabilities, enhancing accessibility. While we haven't seen details about a unified matchmaking system yet, this is a significant leap forward, potentially ending the era of the cumbersome friend code system.

Miyazaki is Bringing New Blood Exclusively to Nintendo

The trailer for The Duskbloods initially fooled me into thinking it was Bloodborne 2. The ambiance, character design, and environments were unmistakably in the FROM Software style. Thanks to Eric Van Allen at IGN, I learned that this is a new multiplayer PvPvE game directed by the renowned Hidetaka Miyazaki, exclusive to Nintendo. It's astonishing to think Miyazaki found the time to create this masterpiece amidst his relentless work schedule, but FROM Software's track record promises an exceptional gaming experience.

A Surprise to be Sure, but a Welcome One

In another unexpected move, Masahiro Sakurai, the director of Super Smash Bros., is shifting his focus to a new Kirby game. This is a surprising pivot, especially considering the underwhelming reception of the original Kirby's Air Ride on GameCube. Sakurai's deep connection to Nintendo's beloved pink hero suggests that this new take on the franchise will be a refined and enjoyable experience.

Control Issues

A seemingly minor detail, but the announcement of the Pro Controller 2 with an audio jack and two mappable extra buttons is a welcome upgrade. The addition of customizable buttons is particularly exciting for gamers like me who appreciate personalized control options.

No Mario?!

The absence of a new Mario game at the Switch 2 launch was a genuine surprise. It appears the team behind Super Mario Odyssey has been busy developing Donkey Kong Bananza, a new 3D platformer focused on destructible environments. This move showcases Nintendo's willingness to defy expectations, betting on the appeal of Donkey Kong to draw in hardcore fans while saving Mario for a later release.

The Switch 2 will launch with strong third-party support and Mario Kart World, which seems poised to be a system-seller. Nintendo's confidence in Mario Kart 8's sales record suggests that, alongside Bananza, Mario Kart World will help drive the Switch 2's launch success.

Forza Horizon x Nintendo Was Not on My Bingo Card

The introduction of an open-world Mario Kart experience was unexpected but promising. The chaotic physics, eclectic vehicles, and combat mechanics of Mario Kart are well-suited for an expansive world similar to Bowser's Fury, but larger and accommodating multiple drivers.

It's Very Expensive

The Switch 2's price tag of $449.99 USD is notably high, especially in the current economic climate with rising tariffs, a declining yen, and American inflation. This makes the Switch 2 the most expensive launch in Nintendo's 40-plus year history in the US, $150 more than the original Switch and $100 more than the Wii U. Traditionally, Nintendo has used lower prices as a competitive advantage, but the Switch 2 will need to succeed without this edge.
